National Development of a Automated Technology for Coating and Manufacturing Welded Tube Boiler and Welding Technology Associates

This project represents the third phase of innovation - the development of an experimental product and is due to the success of previous phases in which they were developed welding technologies and equipment prototypes to solve one of the shortcomings of the maintenance of power plants. At this stage, the aim was to develop an integrated system consisting of a robotic manipulator with five degrees of freedom and welding coating equipment for the recovery boiler tubes damaged by corrosion and erosion, and to increase the useful life of tubes new.

Design and Construction of UFSC's Research Sailboat

This project aims the development of design and fabrication technology of an aluminum boat with 60 ft for UFSC oceanographic research. Developing the state-of-the-art technology for aluminum shipbuilding welding and sub-ordinate activities of all project activities will be in function to LABSOLDA. Therefore, the studies involves the development and knowledge of arc’s physical characteristics in the various versions of the MIG/MAG process. With this, will be search algorithms formulation for the synergistic control of pulsed process, both in continuous and alternating current, in order to best suit the equipment developed by LABSOLDA. Will be studied, in parallel, the characteristics of modern versions of MIG/MAG process brought to the market by the company Fronius: ADVANCED CMT and CMT. Besides the exploration of knowledge for the formation of human resources at all levels and scientific articles writing, it should be formulated welding procedures, both for manual and for automatic application. In this last case, actions will also be conducted for the improvements of robotic systems developed by LABSOLDA. These actions include advances in the performance of mechanical and control systems, as well as the development of systems for joints tracking.

Development of a Low Cost Orbital Welding System for Large Diameter Pipes

Although the orbitals systems developed by LABSOLDA have a relatively low cost compared to imported, they still struggle for acceptance in the Brazilian industry, the primary reason being the cost. The activities LABSOLDA then started to customize the Tartílope V2F, device already own development, for the orbital welding of pipes of large diameter. There are three main ready to be studied: First, it is necessary to develop an orbital band which allows the use of the system in field applications. It is also being carried out a redesign to improve the mechanical performance of the Tartílope V2F moving on curved surfaces with radii smaller. The third point is the study for optimizing MIG / MAG process with a view to application in orbital welding. For this test specimens were built with the same diameter as the pipe where the tests are being carried out using different types of welding MIG / MAG and also different types of wire.

Development of Welding Procedures for Metallic Screen in Project Scope Qualification Premium Screen Developed in Brazil and Welding Batch Pilot

The problem presented by the technical staff of the Sincrotron - National Laboratory of Light was the need to develop process and procedures for automatic welding of metallic filter elements for the manufacture of premium screens, applied in the extraction of oil. First, were developed and tested performed preliminary welding procedures with different welding processes, in order to select a route appropriate technology. Given the result, which said the TIG process as the best performance, was designed and built an automated test bench, which has enjoyed constant hardware and software implementations and improvements throughout the project. It was developed in applied research work, welding procedure for screen-screen top for the union of flat screens and then the seam of the tube, after calendering in part to actual diameter. Then the procedure was developed to screen-plate welding, to be used in union with the screen flat plate which, after calendering part, forms the termination of the metal ring filter element. The plate-plate weld to the metal ring closure, was also developed and conducted in other cell LABSOLDA automated, making use of a 7-axis anthropomorphic robot. As a requirement to be met, it was possible to obtain high quality welds, workmanship and appropriate geometry, and productivity has not figured in the project scope, as a criterion for acceptance. Welded samples, as well as prototypes in actual size, underwent chemical and mechanical tests at LNLS, resulting in satisfactory performance. Therefore, it was possible to apply some prototypes in actual operation it is intended, in oil wells.

Clean Technologies for High Productivity Welding

There is no doubt that the arc welding processes have a significant role as a stage of the production process of most industries. The search for processes of higher productivity and lower cost, clean and sustainable way is the main motivation for the scientific and technological development that occurs incessantly. In the case of welding processes, hundreds of papers are published annually, showing different aspects of the state of the art of a particular process or technique. Considering the Welding Laboratory of the UFSC (LABSOLDA - Institute of Mechatronics), in recent years many developments have also been conducted with different arc welding processes. In most of these studies, the development was completely connected with real industrial applications solutions which sought to increase productivity while maintaining the quality and integrity of the weld, or by coating or union. This project proposes the deepening of scientific studies in modern variants of welding processes that already have industrial relevance, but still have no satisfactory amount of information in the literature, analysis and evaluation of existing technologies and the generation of technological innovations based on a new overview of the limits of productivity of the TIG process, traditionally considered low-speed, technically and economically enabling industrial application, taking advantage of their notorious environmental benefits without detriment to the company's productivity.

Development of Arc Welding Techniques for Copper Parts for the Aerospace Industry

The project aims to develop technology for the welding of copper parts manufactured using arc welding processes. The welding of copper pieces had difficulties when performed by conventional procedures, which required the development of equipment and welding techniques specific and innovative in order to obtain welded joints that meet the design requirements. Also being studied techniques for welding dissimilar to allow the union between copper and stainless steel. This project of developing special welding techniques is conducted in partnership with Orbital Engenharia Ltda., which has agreements to develop manufacturing technology for aerospace components with the IAE (Institute of Aeronautics and Space).

Thus, the activities to be undertaken include a great synergy between the equipment and process automation and welding procedures.

This project is due to the success of the previous one in which welding technologies and equipment prototypes were developed to solve one of the shortcomings of the power plants’ maintenance. Specifically inside the boilers maintenance is necessary to avoid the disruption of the tubes through which water and pressurized steam, that move the power plant's turbines, flow. The reduction of the pipe walls’ thickness is mainly due to erosion and corrosion.
